The Department of Energy (DoE) has concluded that the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic most likely started from a laboratory leak in China after the White House and the United States Congress received a classified intelligence report on the real origin of the said virus.
However, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that the department made its conclusion with “low confidence.” A U.S. official said that the data maintained the consensus that SARS-COV-2 was not the result of Chinese bioweapons and DOE described the likely laboratory-related leak as an “accident” as per their assessment. (Related: THREE YEARS LATE: Energy Department finally concludes that COVID probably came from a Chinese lab.)
There were two prevailing theories about what started COVID-19. First is that the virus jumped from animals to humans at the Wuhan market, where they sell live animals. Second is that the infection was accidentally released by researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a scientific lab a few miles from the wet market. In this scenario, researchers who were studying the virus infected themselves and passed it on to others.
But President Joe Biden’s administration has stood firm against the lab-leak theory. Dr. Anthony Fauci, then the government’s leading infectious disease expert, refuted former President Donald Trump’s claim, citing a study that found the virus’ mutations are “consistent with a jump of a species from an animal to a human.” But Fauci, later on in 2021, contradicted his statement, saying that he “keeps an absolutely open mind that there may be other origins,” and adding that “it could have been a lab leak.”
The shift by the DoE was noted in an update to a 2021 document by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines’ office. It now joins the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the belief that the virus likely spread via an “accident transmission” at a Chinese laboratory.
U.S. officials declined to give details on the fresh intelligence and analysis that led the department to change its stance on the COVID-19 origin. They added that while DoE and the FBI each say that an unintended lab leak is most likely, they arrived at those conclusions for different reasons. The updated document underscored how intelligence officials are still putting together the pieces on how the virus emerged.
More than one million Americans have died in the pandemic that began more than three years ago.
“The agency continues to support the thorough, careful and objective work of our intelligence professionals in investigating the origins of COVID-19, as the President directed,” a DoE spokesperson said.
The House Republicans have already started their own investigation into the origins of the pandemic early this month. Two committees and potentially several more are getting involved in the investigation. The House Energy and Commerce Committee kicked off the first COVID-19 origins hearing early this month in its Oversight subcommittee.
During the hearing, Republicans accused top administration officials of using faulty science and poor judgment to mandate vaccinations for federal workers and recommend mask usage, particularly for children. This has broken public trust in health officials, according to lawmakers.
“Many will say that the American people deserve an apology, but they deserve much more,” said the committee chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash). “I think about every person who lost a loved one to COVID-19. The people who died alone because of the policies. The frontline workers who sacrificed but were still forced out of their jobs because of vaccine mandates and the children isolated and sent home from school closures.”
A separate committee is also set to investigate how hundreds of billions of dollars in COVID relief funds were lost to fraud during both the Trump and Biden administrations.
The committee already questioned the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf and Lawrence A. Tabak, the senior official performing the duties of the director of the National Institutes of Health.
